Oh my goodness, isn't getting children to behave so frustrating at times? I know it was for me when my kids were younger (they're 10 and 13 now!). Take a look at my What to Wear page to help take the overwhelm out of choosing your clothing. Below are some ideas for the best way to prepare your kids for a successful photo session.
Tell your children what to expect
Kids do well when things like photo sessions are not a surprise to them. It's really important to let them know someone with a camera is going to be taking pictures of them at a really fun place. You can even show them photos of themselves from your phone or computer. Kids LOVE to see themselves in photos. Also show them pictures of themselves before the session, as this will help get them excited!
Make it a special day
Instead of bribing your kids to behave, it really helps to say it's going to be a special day. Try not to have a barrage of appointments in the afternoon. Because photo shoots start so late in the summer, try a later nap if your child still naps. If you plan on going out to dinner afterwards, be sure to give them a small snack before you arrive. Hungry tummies make for grumpy kids! Sometimes going out for a treat afterward makes for a fun evening and excitement for the kids. Be sure not to say something like "stop running around or we won't get ice cream tonight!". I will guide the children and we'll definitely capture their personality whether it's wild, calm, silly, or all of the above.
Most importantly -- RELAX!
Your photo session is all about you and your family. Our goal is to capture your family's unique connection. Sometimes kids love to just run around, and honestly that creates some really cute photos. Don't force them to look at the camera and smile. We will get that one holiday photo shot with the family looking at the camera, but the rest of the time we're going to play and laugh, and have an all around great time, all while not looking at the camera. :) So just take a deep breath and relax!
